June press news from Slovenia

In June 2011, a great many events will take place in Slovenia upon the occasion of Slovenia’s 20th birthday (25th June 1991 marks the day when the National Assembly declared Slovenia`s independence) united under the invitation “Homecoming”, together with a range of attractive and internationally renowned festivals beginning in June that give the tourist offer of Slovenia a special note. The biggest “Homecoming” event event will take place in Ljubljana on 1st July 2011. The event is entitled WELCOME HOME.

In May Slovenia got this year’s winner of the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition in Slovenia – the title has been give to the destination of Idrija with the tourist product »Idrija – A Story for All Times«. In May, the Lipica Stud Farm, the cradle of all Lipizzan horses in the world, became richer for the Lipikum Lipizzaner Museum. UNWTO has announced the Ulysses award winners and Slovenia is among them.

As of May, visitors and citizens of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, are able to drive around Ljubljana with new city bicycles in the Bicikelj self-service system of bicycle rental, which brings an attractive additional offer of public transport in the city. 300 bicycles and 600 parking spots are available 24/7 all year round at 31 stations in the wider city centre area, and the system offers an excellent choice for short distances. more...

In April 2011, 17% more foreign overnight stays
Compared to April 2010, in April 2011 14% more tourist arrivals and overnight stays were registered in tourist accommodations in Slovenia. There were 12% more arrivals of domestic tourists, who created 10% more overnight stays, and 15% more arrivals of foreign tourists, who created 17% more overnight stays.
